Melrose Pop Festival 2024: Terri Binion
Balancing a live festival and recording session while building a workflow that informed future productions.
Overview
Terri Binion's performance was recorded live at the end of the 2024 Melrose Pop Festival. It was my first major live recording project at the Melrose Center. I managed the live-audio responsibilities and recording needs with a clear plan, adapting as the day diverged from it.
Problem or opportunity
Keep the live event running while capturing usable session audio in a room that needed ongoing correction—and do both without letting the pressure disrupt the performers or audience.
What I did
- Managed live audio and recording responsibilities during the festival
- Planned the session and adjusted to changes as they occurred
- Made real-time corrections to the room and audio setup
- Mixed and mastered the recorded performance
Process
- Prepared an audio plan for the live event and recording
- Responded to room and setup challenges during the performance
- Used the lessons from the session to develop a more repeatable system for subsequent Melrose recordings
Deliverables
- Live-event audio support
- Recorded, mixed and mastered performance audio
- A foundation for later session workflows
Results
The session was an important first major live-recording test at Melrose. The problems encountered that day helped shape the workflow I used for subsequent sessions.
